LET'S TALK ABOUT GREEN PARTY PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: JILL STEIN
While the media is focusing their lens solely on Democrats Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, and Republicans Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, they have completely disregarded one promising candidate, Dr. Jill Stein. Aside fromHuffington Post's most recent interview (literally published yesterday) with Stein, hardly any major media outlet has interviewed her, even though she has been the Green Party's Presidential nominee twice, in 2012 and 2016. Now that's a little unfair, don't you think? Although the United States is dominated by a two-party system, there are still other parties you should look into-one of these is the Green Party.
So who is Jill Stein?
Jill Stein is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School (We see you smartie!) who is a practicing doctor and environmental-health advocate. Stein has co-authored two books: In Harm's Way: Toxic Threats to Child Development, which was published in 2000, and Environmental Threats to Healthy Aging, published in 2009.
In 2002, Stein was approached by Green Party activists who urged her to run for governor of Massachusetts after seeing her involvement with leading successful campaigns to clean up the coal plants in the state along with many other environmental initiatives.
What has she done?
In 1998, Jill started advocating for the environment when she realized that politicians were simply not protecting children or communities from toxic threats. Since then, Stein has led initiatives that promote green economies and healthy communities, acknowledging that a toxic environment is a human health issue. She has addressed issues on racially charged redistricting,
and has advocated for the cleanup of coal plants, Stein has been arrested many times simply for protesting issues she firmly believes in. In 2012, Stein was arrested at a sit-in to protest housing foreclosures, in Texas for "trespassing" when she went to deliver food and supplies to environmental activists protesting the Keystone XL pipeline, and then again for trying to enter the presidential debate at Hofstra University where she was protesting the exclusion of third parties from debates.
Side note: When Jill was arrested for protesting at Hofstra University, she was tied to a metal chair with plastic ties in an unknown warehouse, for over EIGHT HOURS before being released. The car that was waiting for her outside of the warehouse? Secret service.
What's her 'plan'?
A Green New Deal
Jill wants to create millions of jobs by switching over to 100% clean renewable energy and investing in public transit, sustainable agriculture, and conservation.
Stein is advocating for a livable wage for every American who needs work;A worker should be able to live off of their wage at 40 hours a week instead of having to overwork themselves to make ends meet. Stein wants to protect workers' rights to form unions, achieve workplace democracy, and more.
Jill Stein wants to guarantee every human being access to life's most basic necessities such as: water, housing, food, and utilities, by creating effective anti-poverty programs.
Stein wants everyone to have quality healthcare at an affordable cost and is proposing an improved “Medicare For All” that supports these two points.
Stein wants to abolish student debt not just make college free (which she's totally for.) Stein also wants us to have a world-class public education from pre-school through university. Also, Jill is looking to end high stakes testing and public school privatization- so say goodbye by to the STAAR test kids.
A JUST Economy
Jill advocates for a $15/hour federal minimum wage- she wants to democratize the Federal Reserve and rejects gentrification as a model of economic development. Stein supports small businesses and wants to make big corporations pay their fair share in taxes.
Protect the Planet!
It's time to halt climate change. Jill wants to lead a global treaty that will end fracking, tar sands, offshore drilling, oil trains, mountaintop removal, and uranium mines. Her plan it to protect the land and water supply, biological diversity, parks, and pollinators.
Freedom and Equality
Jill wants to end police brutality, mass incarcerations (the jails are overflowing with people incarcerated because of weed or petty crime), and institutional racism within the justice system. She advocates expanding women’s rights, protecting LGBTQIA people from discrimination (You know that in some states employers can fire you based on this fact alone), defending indigenous rights and lands, and creating a welcoming path to citizenship for immigrants. Protect the free Internet, replace drug prohibition with harm reduction, and legalize marijuana.
Justice for All
Stein is looking to restore our Constitutional rights by ending unconstitutional surveillance and unwarranted spying (we're looking at YOU Patriot Act), terminating persecution of government and media "whistle blowers", close Guantanamo Bay, abolish secret kill lists and more.
Peace and Human Rights
We need to establish a foreign policy that is based on three main points: diplomacy, international law, and human rights. Stein wants to bring the wars and drone attacks to an end, cut military spending by at least 50%, and close the 700+ foreign military bases that are pulling this country into bankruptcy.
Power to the People
Stein wants to ensure that voters' rights are protected by establishing a constitutional right to vote. She's looking to break the "big money stranglehold" by advocating electoral reforms in order to establish a truly representative democracy.
